We are well beyond the time of the Camera Obscura, yet its origins give us proverbial comfort. A return to entombment. The ritual drawing boundaries between the unnecessary light of the outer world and the promise of retraction given by the lens. Roland Barthes declared for us ‘ Death is the eidos of that photograph.’ And here we find ourselves returning to the gesture almost indefinitely.

We partake in acts of self-preservation through infinite absorption, with punctum no longer of a singularity but of so much abundance we mirror the mirror. Yet, hold a mirror to a mirror and the reflection alludes eternal. Light image reduced with each bounce against itself until it is unperceivable, formed again through perceptual restoration, merging trace light into record until defining the difference between our bodies here and the body we see in the image, triggers collective nostalgia and is difficult to individuate.

This is not self-portraiture. The term must be retired ( as well as performative photograph, performance. ) The act is not representational but necessary for survival. Placing the self before the lens is now the natural response ( it was inevitable ) We are aware, willing and in need of lending ourselves over to the device that forever retracts our light in exchange for re-form.
